Are you looking for an intense military love story? Look no further than Rebecca Yarros’ In the Likely Event.
I sped through this book from Kindle Unlimited and also listened to the audiobook and couldn’t stop thinking about Nate and Izzy’s relationship days later.
Here are my thoughts about In the Likley Event by Rebecca Yarros.
When Izzy Astor gets on a plane to go home, she isn’t expecting much. It’s the usual holiday travel experience: busy, crowded, stressful.
Then she spots her seatmate, who is anything but ordinary. Nate Phelan sports dark hair, blue eyes, and a deliciously rugged charm that Izzy can’t resist. Their connection is undeniable. Izzy never believed in destiny before, but she does now.
Just ninety seconds after takeoff, their plane goes down in the Missouri River.
Their lives change. They change. Nate goes on to a career in the military while Izzy finds her way into politics. Despite a few chance encounters over the years, the timing never feels right.

Nate and Izzy first meet on a plane and then proceed to survive the crash 90 seconds after taking off. They had an instant connection and continued to have chemistry over time in their 10-year friendship.
Nate and Izzy would plan trips together and meet up in the midst of his military training and deployments and her college years. Even though they would make these plans, the timing for their relationship to blossom into something more never seemed right.
In the aftermath of their falling out, Nate is assigned to protect Izzy as she puts herself in the middle of a war zone.
Nate will do anything to keep her safe, but Izzy wants his heart.
My Thoughts: In the Likely Event by Rebecca Yarros
Rebecca Yarros really knocked it out of the park with this one; I absolutely loved how she captured the essence of time and fate in Nate and Izzy’s story.
There’s something so raw and genuine about the characters, almost like I could be rooting for two of my closest friends to find their way back to each other.
And let’s talk about the emotional rollercoaster – it’s like Yarros has this knack for making your heart do somersaults with just words.
Every stolen moment they shared, every near-miss—it all piled up into this heap of ‘will they/won’t they’ that I couldn’t wait to find out.
Izzy’s character was especially relatable to me. Her passion and drive to make a difference in the world, even if it meant putting herself in danger, was admirable. And Nate’s determination to protect her at all costs showed just how deep his feelings for her ran.
Nate was thoroughly invested in Izzy, but his time in the military had changed him in ways he couldn’t fully explain. It was heartbreaking to see him struggle with opening up and letting Izzy back into his heart.
This constant battle of being a possibility and missing their shot drove me a little nuts, but it made the story so intense.
Many thought Rebecca Yarros’ portrayal of the war zone was a bit overdone, but it didn’t take away from the story for me. I felt like it added to the intensity and urgency of Nate and Izzy’s rekindling relationship.
I rated the book 4 stars because I found the slow burn of their relationship to be a little frustrating.
I thought Nate was too stubborn and didn’t respect Izzy’s opinions about their relationship and wished their commitment to each other was stronger than the one to their careers.
My romantic heart also wanted them to be only focused on each other and not date other people in their seemingly on-again off-again relationship.
But the intensity of the book and Nate and Izzy’s story still had me reeling after I finished the book!

If you’re in the mood for a heartfelt, emotional rollercoaster of a romance novel with strong characters and an intense plot, then I highly recommend giving In the Likely Event a read.
Yarros’ writing style is very easy to follow. I don’t usually like the flashbacks to the past and present times, but I thought she did pretty well with this romance book.
Overall, reading In the Likely Event had me hooked from beginning to end. The writing was captivating, the characters were relatable and lovable, and the story was equally intriguing.
