His military days may be behind him, but Chappy is hardwired to protect her from the storm and whatever it is she’s running from.

Carlise Edwards didn’t expect her car to break down in the Maine wilderness. All she wants is to escape whoever is stalking her back home. Summary: The Protector by Susan Stoker

Riggs, also known as Chappy to his buddies, was chilling in his mountain cabin when he spots a dog digging around his front porch.

Despite feeling a bit under the weather, he decides to check on the dog so it doesn’t freeze. To his surprise, the dog leads him into the snowstorm and he stumbles upon a woman named Carlise.

Riggs takes Carlise back to his cabin to ride out the snowstorm, but ends up getting sick for 3 days. As Carlise cares for him and they wait for the snow to clear, they spend a lot of time together and feelings start to develop.

However, Carlise harbors a secret that could put a halt to their budding romance.

My Thoughts: The Protector by Susan Stoker

The writing style and pace of the book are delightful. It’s a quick read that effortlessly draws you into the story, making it easy to follow along.

I found myself captivated by the intriguing premise and thoroughly enjoyed the charming moments sprinkled throughout the book.

This reads like one of those insta-love stories, but there’s more to it. Riggs and Carlise just click, and they really balance each other out.

By around 30% of reading, Riggs made it onto my book boyfriend list for sure: he’s sweet, considerate, and very protective.

Riggs is a protector at heart, and when he senses that Carlise is hiding from something, he patiently waits for her to tell him. Then he promptly tells her that he’s going to do whatever he can to make sure no harm comes to her.

Riggs is also thoughtful and caring and kind and… all the book boyfriend-y things! Swoon!

Carlise has had a rough upbringing and then just left an abusive relationship. She’s on the run and not sure she can trust another man.

But when she meets Riggs, Carlise instinctually knows that he’s different from anyone she’s ever met.

I especially loved the close proximity and how that propels their relationship forward. During the time they’re snowed in together, Riggs and Carlise learn so much about each other that when they face the looming problem, it’s like they’re reading each other’s minds.

Final Thoughts: The Protector by Susan Stoker

I loved it! Reading The Protector by Susan Stoker had me hooked so much that I had to get the next book right away. The Protector by Susan Stoker definitely deserves a solid 5-star rating!

If you’re into themes like close proximity, strangers turning into lovers, romantic suspense, and a bit of military background, I totally suggest giving this captivating read a go.
